Nuala Moore (57, Ireland, IISA bio here) is organizing a 90-minute online seminar on June 17th – together with Adrian Mayhew and Dr. Shayne Baker, D. Prof. OAM – on insights into risk assessments, safety plans and rescue, drowning, and myriad information for open water swimmers, triathletes, lifesavers, and event organizers.
Moore describes the webinar, “Do you want more information on all things safety and risk assessment? Do you want insights into open water flows from all angles of situational awareness in oceans, rivers and lakes? Do you want insights into cold water injuries and new science surrounding triathlon, drowning prevention, and impact on flood emergencies?
Adrian and Shayne are both members of the International Lifesaving Federation and commission members on the ILS Rescue Commission and their passion and concern for the wider community impact of drowning. They both had an interest in the impact of flood emergencies and the contribution and have run physical workshops together at World Drowning Prevention Conferences in 2019, 2023 and international webinar series on the same topics based on research of the training needs and PPE for lifeguards.
Adrian Mayhew has 20 years in the Fire & Rescue Service, along with completing a six-year secondment to National Resilience running an Urban Search and Rescue Team. Adrian is the National Director of Operations for the charity Surf Life Saving Great Britain. The charity provides the national and international standards for lifeguards, inshore rescue boats, and training flood rescue teams to provide 24/7 service for the UK in times of national or regional disaster. He is also a frequent lecturer for the University of Leicester’s Diploma in Mountain medicine covering drowning and water survival, and regularly works with Portsmouth University on studies that include the new publications such as Float to Live, Minimising Risk on Cold Water Therapy.
Dr Shayne Baker revised the Open Water Swimming rules for Masters Swimming Australia in 2023 in response to increased interests and demands for open water swimming so along with Adrian Mayhew this will make for a wonderful event. Today, Shayne works with SLSQ/RLSS at a national and international level, is often seen on the pool deck as an official at Life Saving World Championships, is a selector of the Australian Lifesaving team.“
