With over an estimated 500,000 islands located around the world, there are plenty of opportunities for open water swimmers to attempt and complete an unprecedented circumnavigation swim in their lifetimes.

Called the Pearl of the Persian Gulf, Kish is a relatively flat island is located in the Persian Gulf, 19 km (12 miles) from the mainland of Iran.

With an estimated perimeter of 40 km in a nearly elliptical shape ringed by coral reefs and many other small islands, the tourism- and shopping-oriented island would seem like another interesting island to pioneer a circumnavigation swim, especially with its abundance of water sports and water leisure activities and operators.

The island is 15.45 km wide (west to east) with a maximum width of 7.5 km (south to north) with the Kish International Airport located in the center only 35–40 meters above sea level.
