British physiologist and ice swimmer Heather Massey of the University of Portsmouth examined the survival story of New Zealand diver Robert Hewitt in the journal Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine. Hewitt survived 75 hours in the cold ocean water, drifting over a distance of nearly 40 miles off the coast of New Zealand’s North Island.

Massey’s main research interests are in thermal, altitude and survival physiology including cooling rates during clothed swimming in cool water.
