With more and more people jumping into the open water community as the world’s bodies of water continue to become more polluted, it is inevitable that more and more problems will occur as a result of more swimmers training and competing in the open water.
Most swimmers simply do not address the potential problems, but some swimmers take inoculations as preventive measures dependent upon the particular body of water and their physician’s advice.
Other athletes take Xifaxan® (generic name: rifaximin) tablets before their race in the case they are concerned about polluted water or water with bacteria that they are not used to. Some individuals may experience side effects, but Xifaxan® is used for the treatment of travelers’ diarrhea caused by pathogenic E. coli especially in the United States.
