The FINA Aquatics World Magazine selected Thomas Lurz as its Male Open Water Swimmer of the Decade, an honor rightly deserved.
2009 world 5K silver medalist Spyridon Gianniotis said of Thomas, “This guy is phenomenal. He is the best in the world in open water.”
Thomas won the honor with 35.7% of the vote over Bulgaria’s Petar Stoychev with 17.9%, Maarten van der Weijden of the Netherlands with 12.5%, David Davies of Great Britain with 8.9% and Vladimir Dyatchin with 8.9%.
After learning how hard and how intensely he trains, it seems that Thomas fully intends to continue this winning ways in the next decade, too.
