Samir Barel of Brazil attempted a 64 km swim across the Bodensee.

At 1:16 am in pitch darkness, he was swimming well and on a record pace as he neared the halfway point in lake at the northern foot of the Alps, bordering Germany, Switzerland and Austria. But he pulled out and turned his attention elsewhere.

Barel would be back on the Bodensee less than 48 hours later as Thais Sant’Ana.

Oliver Halder of the Bodenseequerung reports on Sant’Ana’s record-breaking swim, “On August 23rd, we allowed Thais to start her swim in the still active time window of Samir Barel with an early swim.

The decision was perfect and she broke the women’s record by 9 minutes under excellent conditions. After 9 hours 10 minutes, she reached the finish in Bregenz after swimming 32.57 km. Thais beat the three-country crossing record of Lake Constance by Nathalie Pohl. The conditions were very good with no winds and no bad currents.”
