Alex Meyer and David Heron train with each other every day. They race and push each other twice a day: the older competitor from New York, the younger one from California. But they both found their way to the University of Tennessee where they train together under taskmaster and renowned distance coach Tyler Fenwick.
So as they came down the straightaway in towards the finish chute at the 2015 USA Swimming Open Water National Championships, it was appropriate that they were racing and pushing each other, each one wanting the 5 km victory.
