Pilar Geijo has raced among the world’s fastest professional marathon swimmers for nearly 15 years on the FINA UltraMarathon Swim Series. But she took time off of the professional circuit to do a famed solo marathon swim in her native country – and set a female record in the process.
Between winning the Series in 2006, 2010, 2011, 2014, and 2015, and her most recent title that she earned in 2019*, the Honor Swimmer in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame attempted a 42 km crossing of the Río de la Plata. She completed the cross-border river swim in 9 hours 33 minutes in August 2018.
* On the 2019 FINA UltraMarathon Swim Series, the 35-year-old from Buenos Aires was the only woman to finish all six professional marathon swims on the circuit:
* 4th in the 15 km Maratón Acuática Internacional Santa Fe – Coronda (Argentina) in 3 hours 26 minutes
* 2nd in the 15 km Maratón Acuática Internacional Ciudad de Rosario (Argentina) in 2 hours 38 minutes
* 2nd in the 32 km Traversée internationale du lac St-Jean (Canada) in 8 hours 12 minutes
* 3rd in the 25 km Ohrid Lake Swim Marathon (North Macedonia) in 5 hours 50 minutes
* 4th in 20 km Novi (Croatia) in 4 hours 35 minutes
* 4th in the 36 km Maratona del Golfo Capri-Napoli (Italy) in 7 hours 50 minutes
