Martin Hobbs Honored By Guinness World Records

South African swimmer Martin Hobbs was honored by Guinness World Records for his 63-day stage swim across Lake Malawi in Africa at the WOWSA Ocean Fest in Redondo Beach, California on October 5th.

Hobbs completed a 596.6 km cross-border swim across Lake Malawi that lies on the borders of Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania between February 20th and April 24th. His effort included 54 days of swimming.

He explains, “Our departure location was Matema, the most northern point in Lake Malawi in Tanzania and our arrival location was Mponda, the most southern point in lake on the sand bar which is the official end of lake as it enters the Shire river in Mangochi district, Malawi.”

Hobbs worked with escort boat captain Oresti Yiannakis, pilot Steven Hobbs , logistic planners Chris Yiannakis and Andrew Yiannakis, and paramedic Russell Malherbe in a charity swim for the Smile Foundation.

45-year-old Hobbs raised money and awareness for The Smile Foundation, a leading South African non-governmental charity group that offers comprehensive health care for children living with cleft palates and other facial conditions.
