The first person to successfully complete the Triple Corona Sudamericana (South American Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming), coined by Lucas Rivet, was International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Honor Swimmer Gustavo Oriozabala of Argentina.
Oriozabala’s exploits ranged from solo ice swimming to professional marathon races.
To date, Oriozabala is the only person to complete all these three difficult solo crossings of the Río de la Plata, the Beagle Channel, and the Strait of Magellan.
He completed the 40.2 km Río de Plata swim from Uruguay to Argentina in 1993 in 27°C water, swam a three-way crossing of the Beagle Channel in 1998, and completed two-way crossing of the Strait of Magellan in 2001.
