Gold Medal Speed Scheduled In Tiburon

Bob Placak announced another amazingly strong lineup for the 11th RCP Tiburon Mile in San Francisco Bay.

On October 16-17, Bob will host ten Olympic gold medalists and a world-class field from 20 countries at his annual open water extravaganza. In the men’s elite heat, Olympic swimming superstar Ryan Lochte, a Florida native who is comfortable in the ocean, will take on 1500-meter gold medalist Ous Mellouli in the US$10,000 winner-take-all 1-mile race while Olympic 10K Marathon Swim bronze medalist Thomas Lurz of Germany will represent the traditional open water swimming community.

After the race, 15 of San Francisco’s finest restaurants will cater the best post-race meal to the swimmers. But it is before the race where Bob is giving the swimming community a real taste of the speed in a new and intriguing gold medal twist to the festivities.

The night before the RCP Tiburon Mile, Bob will also host the new, creatively enticing RCP Tiburon Sprint Classic, properly described as the absolutely fastest swim meet in history. Somehow, someway, Bob has managed to convince USA Olympic gold medalists Ryan Lochte, Matt Grevers, Nathan Adrian, Ben Wildman-Tobriner and Garret Weber-Gale to face Brazilian Olympic gold medalist Cesar Cielo, French silver medalist Fred Bousquet and NCAA Champion Josh Schneider to an all-out 50-meter sprint elimination-heat exhibition.

In a gorgeous two-lane 25-meter pool spectacularly overlooking San Francisco Bay and the site of the RCP Tiburon Mile, the athletes will be paired off in elimination heats.

Mano-a-mano. Face-to-face. Shoulder-to-shoulder. No false starts. No excuses.

The winners advance to the next round while the losers get dressed and join the crowd. Like the open water Tiburon Mile, these athletes will compete for the winner-take-all US$10,000 award.

Spectators will be treated to an unprecedented on-deck perspective of the world’s best sprinters who will give live interviews before and after each heat. As the men battle for the king of the sprint title, spectators – limited to the first 125 fans – will also enjoy culinary delights from San Francisco’s finest restaurants with proceeds benefitting the USA Swimming Foundation and Hospice By The Bay.

So you will be treated to some real swimming speed in the open water and pool on October 16-17.

In the words of Michael Buffer, “Let’s get ready to rumble!!!!”
