The Swim Guide is an app (iPhone and Android) and a web-based platform that delivers free real-time water quality information for over 7,000 beaches, lakes, rivers, and swimming holes in Canada, the U.S., Mexico, New Zealand, the Bahamas, and Australia. It was started by the Lake Ontario Waterkeepers (currently, Swim Drink Fish Canada) in Toronto, Canada and there are currently over 7,000 beaches and swimming holes being monitored in six countries with over 2 million users since 2011.
In addition to the real time water quality, the The Swim Guide app provides:
· Directions to the closest beaches
· Descriptions and amenities
· Social media sharing of beach stories
· Reports of pollution
The Swim Guide is available in English and French. The iOS and Android apps are available in English, French, and Spanish.
Coach Mark Johnston is the designated affiliate for The Swim Guide on Flathead Lake in Montana. “Flathead Lake Open Water Swimmers (FLOW Swimmers) samples, tests, and monitors the recreational water quality of nine swimming areas around the lake. A truly citizen science venture.”
