Stefan Reinke is one tough, experienced marathon swimmer – who trains off Oahu nearly daily.
But Day 2 of the EPIC SWIM Maui wiped him out. “I’m exhausted from Day Two. We had an 8-hour day on the ocean. I did have the good fortune to swim most the day with Sarah Thomas.”
Organizer Robby Seeger described Day 2 after the first day of covering 12.5 km from Hāna to Ke’anae, “[The swimmers] covered over 25 km from Ke’anae to Malika. Even though the morning started with calm currents and blue skies, we’re at the mercy of Mother Nature. Conditions change from one moment to the next. Our island’s dynamic landscape, multitude of elevations, and postion in the Pacific makes us vulnerable to unpredictable weather and radically different forecasts for every part of the island. Our swimmers got to experience this first hand yesterday with some brutal conditions in the afternoon. They persevered through whipping winds, rainfall, rough water, seasickness, and shoulder injuries.”
Conditions are not expected to get much easier during its 20-day 300 km circumnavigation swim around the island of Maui.
Day 3 will bring a most-welcomed day of rest.
