Depart To Serve Thine Own Kind

The entrance gate at Harvard University has the motto, ‘Enter To Grow In Wisdom, Depart To Serve Thine Own Kind.’

This motto reminds us of the career and mindset of Vojislav Mijić who will be inducted as an Honour Swimmer in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame on the Isle of Bute in Scotland this weekend. Like many of his fellow marathon swimmers and open water swimmers of all ages and abilities from Sally Minty-Gravett to Nick Adams, Mijić has a deeply seated passion to share his love for the open water.

Enter To Grow In Wisdom

After a career that saw him explore his own physiological limits and psychological potential, he gradually learned what works and what doesn’t. Year after year, he grew as an athlete and became increasingly mindful of the inherent risks of the sport.

Depart To Serve Thine Own Kind

When Mijić transitioned from athlete to race director, he ultimately shared the wisdom he had gathered to the hundreds of marathon swimmers and ice swimmers who participate in his events. From the Serbia to the ice swims, he is truly sharing the spirit.

Mijić is a well-deserving selection whose life has never been far from the water. Born in 1953 in Šabac, Serbia, Mijić worked for three decades as a chemical engineer in his home town before turning his talents to organizing the Jarak-Šabac Marathon Swim (Plivački maraton Jarak-Šabac) and the Epiphany Swimming for the Holy Cross of Honour, an Epiphany swimming event in January in his native Šabac.
