Daniel Wiffen (@daniel.wiffen) won a tremendous battle against Gregorio Paltrinieri (@greg_palt) of Italy and Bobby Finke (@robert_finke) of the USA in tonight’s 800m freestyle at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Not only did the 23-year-old Irish phenom respond well to Paltrinieri’s surge where he pushed the pace over the last 200 meters, but Wiffen also held off the fast-charging Finke, renowned for his closing speed, over the last 50 meters.
It was a courageous, very well-earned victory that was a result of several millions of hard meters swum in training.
800m Freestyle Results
- Daniel Wiffen (Ireland) 7:38.19
- Bobby Finke (USA) 7:38.75
- Gregorio Paltrinieri (Italy) 7:39.38
- Ahmed Jaquadi (Tunisia) 7:42.83
- Sven Schwarz (Germany) 7:43.59
- David Aubry (France) 7:43.59
- Luca de Tullio (Italy) 7:46.16
- Elijah Winnington (Australia) 7:48.36
Wiffen, Paltrinieri, and Ahmed Jaouadi of Tunisia will face each other again in the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim to be held in the River Seine on August 9th.
But first will come the 1500m freestyle preliminary heats and finals where they will face Florian Welbrock of Germany again.
One event down, two to go.
One gold medal earned, will there be two others in the pool and the Seine?
