26-year-old Conrad Kubaney, a former collegiate swimmer and an emergency department nurse at UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania set the cross-border swim record from Long Point, Ontario, Canada to Freeport Beach in North East, Pennsylvania, USA in 10 hours 56 minutes 45 seconds.
His swim broke the Lake Erie Open Water Swimming Association record previously held by brothers Greg and Tom van Volkenburg of 11 hours 15 minutes 40 seconds last year. Josh Heynes, founder of the Lake Erie Open Water Swimming Association, had identified Kubaney’s potential last year and helped mentor him to the record-setting crossing.
Kubaney’s swim was the fourth recent success across Lake Erie following the previous crossing by 31-year-old teacher and coach Greg Roberts who crossed in 14 hours 50 minutes as a charity swim [see here].
