Swim Ireland announced its 2017 Open Water Swimmer of the Year, Carol Cashell from Cork, Ireland. She was a former competitive pool swimmer with the Dolphin Swim Club who transitioned easily from distance freestyle events in the pool to even longer sea swims with the Sandycove Island Swim Club.

After her successful Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in 2013, she capped off her Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming with a July 14th crossing of the 32.3 km Catalina Channel from Santa Catalina Island to the Southern California mainland in 10 hours 28 minutes 53 seconds. Six weeks later on August 26th, she completed a crossing of the English Channel from England to France in 10 hours 18 minutes.
