Seine Water Quality

According to the organizers, different projects from different public stakeholders have reduced the bacteriological pollution by 75% in the recent years. With the delivery of final infrastructures, such as the Austerlitz bassin inaugurated this month, the marathon swim and triathlon competitions are expected to take place as planned.

Water quality is being addressed by the City of Paris and Paris 2024, involving multiple stakeholders including Agence Régionale de Santé (Health Regional Agency), Direction Régionale et interdépartementale de l’environnement, de l’aménagement et des transports (Transports, Planning, Environment regional Direction), Préfecture Région Ile-de-France (state authority), Eaux de Paris (laboratory), Méteo France (forecast).

The Eau de Paris laboratory will test and analyze the water quality twice a day during Olympic Games.

Standard monitoring started from June 1st with a daily one-sample monitoring at four different collection spots along the venue. Additional monitoring will start on July 20th, two weeks before the marathon swim competitions. Results will be delivered within 24 hours from the sample collections.

During the Olympics, a Daily Situation Meeting will take place with the various parties involved in the competition. World Aquatics will communicate the outcome of the meetings to the team delegations.

  • If the women’s 10 km race on August 8th is rescheduled, there will be a double session on August 9th with the men’s race held between 7:30 – 10:00 am and the women’s race held between 12:30 – 3:00 pm
