Pedro Ordenes of Water World Swim escorts and coaches swimmers from his adopted San Francisco Bay and the Strait of Magellan in his native Chile to the Galápagos Islands off the South American coast and Strait of Messina in Italy.
Water World Swim, the world leader in open water swimming, announced its successful 6-person crossing.
Mitali Khanzode, Dominic Gallello, Carola Khouri, Annika Khouri, John Newberry, and Ricardo Arenas each crossed the Strait of Messina in Italy.
Khanzode, the youngest of the group at 15 years, finished the 3.5 km crossing in 1 hour 20 minutes.
“Completing this swim was a dream of mine that has not yet completely set in. I’ve loved being an open water swimming and this was an incredible opportunity to take on my first international open water event,” described Khanzode. “The best part of this swim was landing! I felt this immediate rush of exhilaration knowing that I set a record.”
“I have been coaching Mitali since her very first swim in open water in the San Francisco Bay, and once again today, she made me proud,” said Water World Swim founder Ordenes. “After so many Alcatraz swims, expanding to international competitions and crossings is a huge milestone in her future both in and out of the water. The entire team worldwide is very proud of her.”
