A Marathon Meander Along The Mediterranean

Jari Cennet Tammi is a skilled adventurer through and through. He envisions swims, he makes comprehensive plans, and then he goes about executing them, mitigating risks in an intelligent manner.

The Swedish adventurer specializes in self-sufficient swims (also known as self-sustained swimsself-supported swims, or  unsupported swims).

In 2021, he completed a 328 km unsupported stage swim from Oaxen to Öregrund on the east coast of Sweden along the Baltic Sea, coast of Uppland.

Then he stepped up his game in training, preparations, and execution.

At the age of 64, he successfully completed a 541.7 km unsupported stage swim from Stockholm, Sweden to Helsinki, Finland that took him 52 days to complete. Between June and August, he swam towing a 105 kg kayak carrying all his food and gear. It was his second attempt. The first attempt was halted after 180 km when he missed a scheduled landing spot. His unsupported swim broke the 456 km unsupported stage swim of his friend Jonas Deichmann who completed his swim in 2020 during his first leg of his world triathlon. During this record swim from Sweden to Finland, he also completed a 33.3 km one-way crossing of the Ålands Sea, a record for longest unsupported swim across a sea.

But now he is really, really, really stepping up his game – and inviting others to join him during his journey along the northern coastline of the Mediterranean Sea.

Next August 2024, he will attempt a 7,700 km ultra marathon stage swim from Istanbul, Turkey to Cádiz, Spain that he estimates will take him 7 years to complete along the entire northern Mediterranean Sea coast. He plans to stay in a tent and guest houses, whatever suits him best at the time – and will invite people to join him along his route, for a little bit or a long bit or bits and pieces every now and then.
