The 4th Ice Swimming Aqua Sphere German Open 2018 between January 5th – 7th was a great success at a new venue at the Veitsbad in Veitsbronn near Nuremberg. The 50m 7-lane pool is in a small village, the home town where Christof Wandratsch had learned swimming as a child.
Oliver Halder described the venue. “We had a warm welcome in this area for this cool sport. Everybody supported us and for the sport and the event, we found a very great venue.
The highlights of the event included the world record time in the 1 km swim by Hanna Bakuniak from Poland when she beat the previous world record holder and reigning world champion Julia Wittig from Burghausen.
“Among the men, we had also a change among the leading swimmers. Fergil Hesterman from the Netherlands beat Petar Stoychev, the reigning world champion in 1000 m freestyle. Both races were very exciting as well with the shorter distances with a lot of action,” said Halder.
“There were 192 participants with a total of 440 starts. Thousands of spectators watched the event on site or online by a live stream. It was a great experience. Christof and I are very lucky that we found a great supporter with Birgit Becher, Matthias Hofmann, Klaus Ludwig and Peter Erl.”
