Woomin Kim and Guilherme Costa Throw Down Some Fast Freestyling in Paris. Will Their Speed, Stamina Be a Factor in the Seine?

Spread the love

On July 27th at La Défense Arena Pool at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, Woomin Kim of South Korea (@win___min) and Guilherme Costa of Brazil swam to a 3:42.50 and a 3:42.76 in the 400m freestyle.

Kim’s time was fast enough for a bronze medal while Costa finished fifth. Oliver Klemet of Germany was off his best time and finished seventh in 3:46.59.

But Kim and Costa’s blazing fast times are bound to throw another wrinkle in the men’s Olympic 10K Marathon Swim to be held in the River Seine on August 9th. While they may lack in the open water experience like gold medalists Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy and Florian Wellbrock of Germany, their level of speed and stamina will bound to make an impact in the race – if only to push the pace faster from the beginning or bring on a final fast closing speed in the 10,000 meter race.

Yes, there are no lane lines, no walls, and no diving blocks in the Olympic marathon swim, but speed is speed whether in a river, bay or ocean.

And Kim and Costa started off this Paris Olympics with some very fast swimming. With 400 meters to go in the 10 km marathon swim, that kind of speed will ultimately have an impact on the race.
