3 is a lucky number. The number of Triple Crown bucket lists around the open water swimming world continues to increase over time.
Early this year in February, Ram Barkai of the International Ice Swimming Association announced a new ice swimming concept: the Ice Triple Crown.
The Ice Triple Crown is a designation and honor ratified by the International Ice Swimming Association for swimmers who have completed three Ice Swims in their career. These Ice Swims have to be completed in each of the following locations:
- Southern Ice Mile either in Africa, Oceania, Polar Antarctica, or South America
- Northern Ice Mile either in Asia, Europe, North America, or the Polar North
- Ice Kilometer at the IISA World Championship or a recognized National IISA Championship in a pool less than 5.0°C
While only 13 humans in history have become Ice Triple Crowners to date, it is expected there may be over 100 athletes who will achieve this achievement over the next 3 months.
