Where Are They Now? Alex Meyer is Co-founder of JÜJ

Retired 2012 Olympian and 2010 world 25 km champion Alex Meyer says of his new venture, “I spent years as an Olympic athlete fine-tuning everything – or so I thought – about my body that would make me feel better and swim faster. However, I was short-sighted and overlooked crucial aspects of my health and nutrition; I thought of my gut health as something totally separate from high performance and well-being, something that I had to just deal with, and that making efforts to improve would distract me from a better use of my time and energy. As long as I was consuming all the right macros in addition to my training, I would be in tip top shape, right?

As a lifelong athlete, diehard foodie, relentless seeker of interesting flavors and ingredients, and committed tinkerer with a strong background in chemistry and biology, I’ve combined these favorite parts of myself along with Meg’s deep gut health expertise to create JÜJ.

Meyer teamed up with Megan Gerber to teach and use bitters as digestive health remedies. Together, they created JÜJ that crafts and markets small batches of curated bitter blends including cranbiscus digestive bitters, orange digestive bitters, and lemon digestive bitters.

Gerber is a Registered Gut Health Dietitian with Celiac disease and 10 years of clinical experience working in gut health. “I found that most people struggling with gut issues like constipation, acid reflux and bloating have symptoms that are often rooted in digestive insufficiency.” And, hence JÜJ was born.

Gerber explains further, “Bitters are herbal tinctures made from an infusion of bitter plants and herbs. In the simplest terms, bitters stimulate the bitter receptors lining the GI tract to trigger a domino effect of enhanced digestion and overall gut health.”

Meyer prefers the original blend, the Orange Digestive Bitters. “It is our original digestive bitters and is best for optimizing overall digestion, especially if you struggle with acid reflux, bloating, constipation or blood sugar imbalances. It is formulated with water, alcohol, orange peel, grapefruit peel, quassia bark, ginger root, gentian root, coriander seed, cardamom seed, caraway seed, fennel seed, star anise, and clove.
