The Mighty Mac Swim is an annual Labor Day race across the Straits of Mackinac between Michigan’s peninsulas, alongside the Mackinac Bridge.
The Michigan Open Water Championship limits its field to 80 swimmers and will benefit Habitat for Humanity. The first 79 athletes who meet qualifications will be accepted into the race. The 80th swimmer will be auctioned to the highest qualified bidder to benefit Habitat for Humanity of Michigan.
The registration deadline is June 30th. For qualification rules, visit here.
In addition to donating money as a charity swim, the Mighty Mac Swim has 3 unique awards that it will offer. A US$20,000 grand prize will be awarded to the overall male and female winners and the top fundraiser wins a one-week vacation in Costa Rica.
The grand prize awards may not be given unless 80 swimmers contribute a minimum of US$5,000 either in personal sponsorship or through other forms of fundraising for Habitat for Humanity of Michigan in order to participate in the Mighty Mac Swim. Race director Jim Dreyer explains, “We have every intention of delivering the prizes. We may reduce the two US$20,000 grand prizes if 80 swimmers do not register and each raises a minimum of US$5,000 for Habitat for Humanity. However, we may still elect to award the prizes as promoted under any circumstances.”
The massive amount of fundraising amounts and scale of cash prizes to be awarded are supported by 40,000 – 65,000 spectators who will be walking along the course and cheering for the athletes.
