The Triple Crown of South America is decribed by Adherbal de Oliveira, founder of the Travessia do Leme ao Pontal. “The 36 km Travessia do Leme ao Pontal in 18°C – 26°C water in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the 1.6 km Beagle Channel in 5°C – 11°C water between Argentina and Chile, and the 42 km Cruce a Nado del Río de la Plata in 20°C – 26°C water between Uruguay and Argentina comprise of the Triple Crown South America.
He explains, “The Triple Crown includes the main crossings of South America. The swimmer needs to complete to swim in icy waters in the Beagle Channel, across a river in the Río de la Plata, and in the sea with the Leme ao Pontal. All crossings can be performed by a solo swimmer or in relays, with or without neoprene.
The purpose of the Triple Crown is to promote and encourage the practice of open water swimming in the national scenarios of South America.
Lucas Rivet of the Asociación Cruce a Nado Río de la Plata described the background of the series, “The Leme to Pontal will enrich this challenge … now swimmers who want to complete the Triple Corona Sudamericana must swim across a river, in the sea and in icy waters, and needs to swim both long and short distances.
A Leme to Pontal Swimming Association (LPSA) along with the Asociación Cruce a Nado Río de la Plata or ACNRP, and the Beagle Channel crossing organization are organizing to establish an award for every swimmer who completes a Triple Crown South American.
At this time, no swimmer has completed more than one of the three crossings. Soon, all the swimmers who started the search for the Triple Crown South American are equal in reaching this new goal. Since the Triple Crown was announced on each of the Associations’ social networks, several swimmers have shown an interest in being the first to conquer a South American Triple Crown.
