18-year-old Erica Sullivan of the Sandpipers of Nevada will focus on training for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and will wait for two years to enroll at the University of Southern California until after the next Olympics. Her college coaches, Dave Salo and Catherine Vogt, are supportive of her decision.
She told Swimming World Magazine, “I decided to defer for a total of two years because I’ve recently been given an opportunity to follow my dreams. When I committed to USC there was no way to predict how far I would come. Dave and Catherine have gone above and beyond to show their support for me in a situation where a lot of coaches wouldn’t. I still plan to join them after the Olympic cycle.”
Sullivan has a shot to qualify for the 800m freestyle, 1500m freestyle and 10 km marathon swim – all events where she is currently in the top 5 in the USA.
