MEXICO. Petar Stoychev won the 15K FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix in Sumidero Canyon’s meandering river in 3:19:52. Spain’s Diego Nogueira was second (3:20:16) and Francisco Hervas third (3:20:27). Pilar Geijo of Argentina won the women’s title in 3:35:27 with teammate Antonnela Bogarin second (3:35:35) and Marta Recio of Spain third (3:35:39).

Canadian coach Ron Jacks of Victoria reported, “It was a strong field with a couple of Olympians. The race [really] started when Petar took the lead at seven kilometres.” The top Canadian, 19-year-old Richard Weinberger, was sixth in 3:20:37. “That was Richard’s best open water race so far. He stayed with the top people.”
