Time Magazine Reports On Shark Survival

Time Magazine published a thought-provoking report on sharks where they pinpointed the decline in sharks due to the popularity of shark-fin soup and their accidental deaths because of fishing gear set for other species. As a result, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature estimates that as many as a third of all shark species are threatened or near threatened with extinction, including the great white.

Time Magazine also points out Juliet Eilperin’s new book on sharks called Demon Fish: Travels Through the Hidden World of Sharks. In the book, Eilperin describes mankind’s psychological perspective of sharks and how a shark fin sighting causes stress and fear.

As Christopher Neff, an Australian shark researcher, Vito Bialla of the Night Train Swimmers and Ram Barkai of the International Ice Swimming Association frequently state, “Swimmers are not on their menu.”

Time Magazine summarizes that to save sharks, the mindset of shark-fin consumers must be changed. If that happens, the infrastructure around the supply of shark fins will hopefully stop.
