When one thinks of some of the greatest athletes in the world, multiple Olympic champions and world record holders like swimmers Michael Phelps and Grant Hackett, one doesn’t necessarily think of overcoming adversity.
But Tim Ferriss spoke with both of these renowned Olympic champions in his latest podcast where they talked about the adversities they faced.
Phelps, in addition to his 28 Olympic medals, including 23 gold medals, and 39 world records, established the Michael Phelps Foundation that is utilized the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Special Olympics International and received the Champion of Youth award from the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, the Humanitarian Award from the American Image Awards, the Special Recognition Award from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the Morton E. Ruderman Award in Inclusion of the Ruderman Family Foundation, and the Health Influencer 50 and 2020 Communicator of the Year from PR Week, among others.
Phelps served as an executive producer and featured talent in the HBO documentary The Weight of Gold, which explores the mental health challenges Olympic athletes often face. In addition, he has published two autobiographies, No Limits: The Will to Succeed and Beneath the Surface, which were New York Times and USA Today bestsellers, and one children’s book, How to Train with a T-Rex and Win 8 Gold Medals.
Hackett won 58 medals and set 16 world records at Olympic, Commonwealth, and World Championships while remaining unbeaten for 11 years in the 1500m freestyle. Grant also received prestigious honors such as the Order of Australia, Centenary Medal, and Australian Sports Medal. Grant is a member of the Sports Australia Hall of Fame and International Swimming Hall of Fame. Grant is the CEO of Generation Life, an Australia-based investment firm managing more than $1.3 billion.
