While there have been over major major media articles on the poor water quality of the Seine with dire predictions of athletes getting sick and the need to clean urban waterways, the fastest marathon swimmers and distance freestylers in the world gathered in the Seine this morning for their one familiarization swim.
Swimmers completed a 1.67 km loop around the course, swimming quickly and effortlessly downstream and much more slowly on the way back, swimming upstream. The races will be held tomorrow and Friday with a 7:30 am start. Sights and sounds from today’s Olympic 10K Marathon Swim course are below for your reference. The clips show the course, start, finish chute, Omega Timing gate, and different athletes (from Daniel Wiffen of Ireland to Airi Ebina of Japan) swimming along the course.
We have long predicted the course is technically demanding and requires a very high navigational IQ. Tactics and strategies of some swimmers may be executed perfectly well, but one yellow card or one instance of physicality can just as easily knock a swimmer off the Olympic podium.
There will be great races over the next 48 hours – with many different leaders and changes in pace.
