The Past And The Future In Lake Tahoe

The Lake Tahoe Swimming Association (swimtahoe.com and swimtahoe.org) is the governing body of marathon swims in Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe is a high-altitude, large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada range in the western United States on the border of the states of California and Nevada in the western United States of America. The purposes of the Lake Tahoe Swimming Association are:

* To promote interest in marathon swimming in Lake Tahoe
* To furnish information to and advise those intending to attempt marathon swims in Lake Tahoe
* To promote the safety and welfare of the swimmer while attempting marathon swims in Lake Tahoe
* To observe and authenticate persons who attempt marathon swims in Lake Tahoe
* To gather and preserve historical data on marathon swims in Lake Tahoe

There has been a long history of successful swims along its length, including the following pioneers who started and finished at various points (for details, visit here:

1. Fred Rogers (age 29) in July 1955 swam 19:06 (19.96 miles)
2. Erline Christopherson (age 16) in July 1962 swam 13:17 (16.76 miles)
3. Leonore Modell (age 13) in October 1963 swam 13:34 (20.49 miles)
4. Dave Kenyon (age 35) in September 1987 swam 9:20 (20.81 miles)
5. Grant Heck (age 31) in September 1989 swam 12:03 (21.02 miles)
6. Suzie Dods (age 28) in September 1989 swam 11:07 (17.63 miles)
7. Laura Collette (age 39) in September 2003 swam 12:36 (20.53 miles)
8. Kevin Murphy (age 54) in July 2003 swam 13:56 (20.67 miles)
9. Laura Colette (age 40) in July 2004 swam 12:02 (21.24 miles)
10. Bruckner Chase (age 39, shown above) in August 2005 swam 11:16 (20.53 miles)
11. Ken Harmon (age 45) in August 2005 swam 11:19 (21.24 miles)
12. Tom Lithicum (age 48) in August 2006 swam 16:29 (20.65 miles)
13. Jim Fitzpatrick in September 2006 swam 13:56 (21.24 miles)
14. Catheryne Diprete (age 44) in September 2007 swam 10:14 (21.091 miles)
15. Karen Rogers (age 42) in August 2009 swam 10:50 (21.24 miles)
16. Patti Bauernfiend in August 2009 swam 10:38 (21.24 miles)
17. Michelle Deasy in September 2009 swam 21.24 miles
18. Clark Bird (age 39) in August 2010 swam 13:23 (21.24 miles)
19. Dave Van Mouwerik (age 53) in August 2011 swam 13:51 (21.24 miles)
20. Tom Hecker (age 59) in August 2011 swam 15:08 (21.24 miles)
21. Brad Schindler in August 2011 swam 11:26 (21.24 miles)
22. Jim Fitzpatrick in September 2011 swam 14:59 (21.24 miles)

And there will undoubtedly be many more to come.
