The Importance of the MPSF Open Water Swimming Championships

From an organizational perspective during the 2024 – 2028 Olympic quadrennial for marathon swimming, the most important race in the United States will arguably occur in Marine Stadium in Long Beach, California on October 19th.

Lots of key decisions will be made – or at least considered by key decision-makers – that have long-term implications.

The LA28 Organizing Committee will be on hand to observe the 5 km MPSF Open Water Swimming Championships as well as representatives from the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association, USA Swimming, and the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee. These three organizations have established a working group to introduce open water swimming into the NCAA sport sponsorship framework.

If successful, their efforts will increase open water swimming opportunities for college athletes in the U.S. and enhance the long-term sustainability of collegiate pool swimming programs. The NCAA is pivotal in developing world-class athletes in the U.S., whether American or not. Adding open water swimming allows universities to have their current men’s and women’s swimmers train for and participate in open water swimming competitions during the fall season.

In addition, numerous local groups are lobbying for the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim course to be moved from its currently planned location at Alamitos Beach in Long Beach to Marine Stadium due to improved spectator seating and viewing, avoiding potential urban runoff due to rain, and the local organizational know-how.

The 5 km race on October 19th will be live streamed for a fee at Game On Live Studio. Race announcers will include former USA Swimming national team member Becca Mann.
