Swimming On The Actual 2016 Olympic Marathon Course

The Olympic 10K Marathon Swim was initially held in the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park (顺义奥林匹克水上公园 or 順義奧林匹克水上公園), 60 km outside Beijing during the 2008 Olympic Games. Then the Serpentine was the site of the 2012 London Olympics Games 10 km marathon swim.

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the 10 km marathon swim will be held in Odaiba Marine Park in Tokyo Bay.

But none of these venues allow amateur swimmers, masters swimmers or others to swim in the same venue as the Olympians.

Pedro Rego Monteiro is taking a different course for the 2016 Rio Olympics. He and his team at the King and Queen of the Sea are going to offer interested swimmers from around the world the opportunity to swim on the actual Olympic 10K Marathon Swim course at the 2016 Rio Olympics next year.

He wants swimmers of all ages and abilities to have the personal experience of swimming on the Olympic course – just like the Olympians will do next August.

In the video above, he describes the new 10 km marathon swim that will be held in the actual Olympic venue on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro – that will be open to amateur swimmers and masters swimmers along with elite professionals swimmers in the months leading up to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
