The Apostle Island Relay Swim (A.I.R.S.) is a 20-mile (32.2 km) solo swim and relay competition around Madeline Island in Bayfield, Wisconsin.
Madeline Island is one of the 22 Apostle Islands in Lake Superior located off the Bayfield peninsula in Northern Wisconsin. The largest of the Apostle Islands, it is the only island in the Apostle Island chain open to commercial development and private ownership.
Besides the solo category, swimmers can participate in 2 to 6 person relay teams.
Race director John Murphy knows the conditions well on Lake Superior and may change the course on race day due to wind and weather conditions. In the event of strong winds, the race may become a out-and-back swim on the lee side of the island as it was in 2015 when the top 3 finishers included Linda Steward (11 hours 5 minutes), Austin Frazier (11 hours 23 minutes), and Landon Ascheman (11 hours 36 minutes).
