One of the premier events on the JBay December holiday programme, the Marina Mile will take place on December 13th 2015 in the salt water canals of Marina Martinique.
“There are plenty of events on offer this year with the Double Mile kicking off the day,” reports Brenton Williams. “This will be followed by a 500-meter swim aimed at swimmers who are not quite comfortable with swimming a Mile, but still want to enter the day’s festivities.
The main event is the Marina Mile that will be preceded by a bank-to-bank swim, which is a 40-meter swim for swimmers 10 years and under who are new to open water.”
The Marina Mile, which first took place back in 1994, is one of the most popular open water swim events in South Africa and has been won by the like of Sprinbok swimmers Tyron Venter and Velia Janse Van Rensburg. Jessica Roux, who represented South Africa in the 10K marathon swim at the 2012 Olympic Games, is also a multiple winner of the Marina Mile.
“The Marina Mile is a highly spectator-friendly event, with swimmers easy to spot from the banks of the canals and safe for swimmers as well as there are no currents, tides or wildlife to worry about. Training sessions take place every Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 5:45 pm and visiting swimmers are welcome to join. The JBay Open Water Swim Club meets at the Marina Wharf restaurant at Marina Martinique.”
Entries can be done online at www.swimmingplus.com and late entries will be accepted on the day.
