Coaches often try to keep their swimmers focused on maintaining a streamlined body position. This includes keeping an optimal head position, looking straight down, in order to minimize resistance while breathing and kicking.

I am reminded of the advantages of being streamlined and minimizing resistance when swimming when I observed Italian freediver Alessia Zecchini diving to 107 meters below the surface while holding her breath for more than 3½ minutes [to set a constant weight apnea freediving world record],” observed Steven Munatones.

Her efficiency of movement is impressive.”
