Steve Jobs On The Joy Of Work

Steve Jobs, the legendary entrepreneur and co-founder of Apple, passed away today.

His vision, energy and talents were immense and his influence on various industries were even greater. As a result of his creativity, he led Apple to invent devices that are easy to use, gorgeous pieces of silicon and plastic, and essential to millions of people’s lives.

He once said to Stanford University graduates, “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.

And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.”

His words of wisdom hint at the very essence of what open water swimmers enjoy doing. Open water swimmers around the world are usually flush with joy and clearly demonstrative of their exhilaration for life.

Across continents, newcomers and veterans, plodders and elites, men and women consistently show and express contentment with their lives and their chosen sport; a large majority who are content with their lives, satisfied with their careers, and in harmony with their friends and family.

Open water swimmers smile, laugh, and express themselves with exuberance, either quietly or colorfully. They often reach out to others, offering help and sharing their experiences, knowledge and time.

Like Steve Jobs, hard work and commitment also play into their success. Similar to the ups and downs of Apple’s fortunes over the decades, they realize that work, school and life do not always go to plan and figuring out solutions and overcoming obstacles are part of life’s natural course.
