Stately, Splendid, Stunning Swim Around Charleston

The fifth annual Swim Around Charleston (SAC) was held on September 26th with a noon time start.
Cheryl Reinke of Rock Hill, South Carolina was the overall winner in a time of 4:41.16 for the 12-mile effort.
The Swim Around Charleston is a unique way to see one of America’s most beautiful and oldest cities. Charleston remains the number one destination city in the USA, according to Conde Nast Traveler. The swim allows participants to see the port, Charleston’s waterfront, including its parks and the famous White Point Gardens at the Battery. The swim proceeds up the Ashley river with views of The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina and sweeping marshland vistas. Swimmers pass under many of the area’s bridges on the way to the finish at I-526.
This year’s swim offered water and air temperatures in the upper 70°F’s, mild winds, a small brief shower and a little chop in the harbor but overall, a great day for swimming.
Race founder and director Kathleen Wilson says, “We had the last great day of swimming for the event this year. Exactly one week later, coinciding to the minute with the first finishers of SAC, we were passing an emergency ordinance on behalf of the police department, closing the peninsular city to incoming traffic due to unprecedented rain and flooding within the city of Charleston.”
Swimmers saw the best of Charleston, returned home safely and watched as flooding overtook many portions of the city. Some of our residents have yet to return to normal with homes and property lost. South Carolina is still reeling and waters have yet to recede in some communities.”
Charleston and surrounding communities will recover and plan on hosting Swim Around Charleston 2016. Race date and details to be announced January 1st 2016.
