For Australian swimmers aiming to get on the podium in the major international open water swims coming up in 2019, Brighton Beach in South Australia is the all-important site of the 2019 Australian Open Water Championships this week.

The first day saw training teammates Kareena Lee and Nick Sloman climb on top of the podium as they fended off their domestic rivals and a slew of foreign competitors from China, Japan, Canada, New Zealand and Hungary.

21-year-old Sloman defended his title from his 2018 victory on the opening day of the championships while the 25-year-old Lee won her first national title.

Sloman, Kai Edwards, third-place Hayden Cotter and Bailey Armstrong earned themselves a spot on the Australian national team that will travel to Doha for the first leg of the FINA Marathon Swim World Series. The race is part of the qualification process for the FINA World Championships in South Korea later this summer.

Kareena Lee easily won over her Australian competitors in addition to a slew of China’s elite open water swimmers. Lee, sisters Chloe and Chelsea Gubecka, and Mackenzie Brazier will travel to Doha representing Australia in May for the FINA Marathon Swim World Series.
