A number of open water swimmers and physicians have given TED Talks at various locations around the world: Lewis Pugh, Diana Nyad, Maarten van der Weijden, Ori Sela, Vicki Keith, Dr. Peter Attia, Tim Ferriss, Dr. Angel Yanagihara, Maria Conceicao, and Dr Tim Noakes.
Professor Noakes is a world-renowned scientist and researcher from the University of Cape Town in South Africa and a co-founder and executive director of the Sports Science Institute of South Africa. He is an author, a respected academic and scientist who has long been acknowledged as an expert in the field of sports and the science of physical exercise.
He accompanied Lewis Pugh to the North Pole for his 1 km ice swim where he was responsible for making sure that Pugh returned home alive. In the build-up to that event, he coined the phrase “anticipatory thermo-genesis” (the creation of heat before an event), a phenomenon that had not been noted in any other human.
