Rio Report Mixes Up Guanabara Bay, Copacabana Beach

Steve Garagiola, a Detroit-based anchor, reported on Sean Ryan‘s upcoming participation in the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim in Copacabana Beach. Garagiola says that Rio de Janeiro’s extremely high levels of drug-resistant super bacteria in garbage and human waste are flowing untreated into Copacabana Beach.

The bacteria is linked to urinary, gastrointestinal, pulmonary, and bloodstream infections, even meningitis,” quotes his report.

The problem is that in Garagiola’s report, he shows photos and videos and quotes data that are not from Copacabana Beach.

His report is very misleading at best and typical of the media reports that confuse Guanabara Bay and Copacabana Beach.

But Garagiola did a nice interview with Olympic medal hopeful Ryan here.
