The DWB (Deep Water Bay) is a 5 km open water swim organized by Ken Thorley in Hong Kong on April 29th.

Thorley reported, “48 swimmers competed in the 5 km race that was held in perfect spring weather and a comfortable water temperature of 23°C. The race involved a course which started and finished at The Victoria Recreation Club in Deep Water Bay, and circled Middle Island. The race was a tremendous success, and will be followed by a 10 km race, The VRC 10k, in 2 weeks.”

The race included young Hong Kong national open water swimming representatives and older swimmer including 60-year-old Mark McWhinnie who finished in 1 hour 21 minutes.

Two swimmers from the Tai Po Swimming Club, 21-year-old Sunny Poon and 15-year-old Jeffrey Wong, eventually broke away from the pack, and raced all the way to the finish, with Poon crossing first, 10 seconds ahead of his younger teammate.

A pack of 10 swimmers swam in the chase pack and battled for third place, with 14-year-old Bill Thorley finishing ahead of the first female, 16-year-old Nikita Lam and 17-year-old Kwan Ho Yin.
