HUANCHACO, TRUJILLO, PERU
One of only five surfing reserves in the world, Huanchaco is the birthplace of wave-riding. For over 3,000 years, local fishermen have scoured the waters aboard caballitos de totora, beautiful vessels woven from native totora reeds. Visitors can try surfing on caballitos for a small fee and then grab a bite of fresh ceviche a delightful seafood dish orginating in Huanchaco. According to Peruvian surf legend Felipe Pomar, the beaches of Huanchaco have, “some of the most consistent surf on the planet, practically every day of the year.”
