While each and every entrant in the 20 Bridges Manhattan Island Swim has a fascinating back story, it was 67-year-old Pat Gallant-Charette who generated national and international news interest.
By adding a successful completion of 20 Bridges to her prolific career in 10 hours 53 minutes, she became the oldest person – male or female – to complete the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming.
She completed a crossing of the Catalina Channel at the age of 60 in 2011, a crossing of the English Channel at the age of 66 in 2017, and the 20 Bridges Swim at the age of 67, breaking the record of James Clifford who completed a crossing of the Catalina Channel at the age of 62, the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim at the age of 62, and a crossing of the English Channel at the age of 63.
