给力 or gelivable is a new Chinese Internet buzzword which means cool or awesome or exciting. The two Chinese characters – 给 (gei) and 力 (li) – mean giving power. When the word (geili) appeared in The People’s Daily – the official paper of the Communist Party – it was granted the official seal of approval.
A test of a Chinese word’s trendiness is if Chinese users translate it into a foreign language. Geili has been transformed into the English-sounding gelivable and ungelivable and the French très guélile.
