Daniel Wiffen (@daniel.wiffen, shown above), Ireland’s gold medalist in the 800m freestyle, is confident that he is rewriting history. He may very well do so.

Today, Wiffen comfortably qualified first, ahead of his rivals Gregorio Paltrinieri (@greg_palt), bronze medalist in the 800m) of Italy and Ahmed Jaouadi (@ahmed__jaouadi) of Tunisia (4th in the 800m, shown below) in the preliminary 1500m heats.

Another rival American Bobby Finke (@robert_finke), the silver medalist in the 800m, qualified sixth. Other 10 km marathon swimmers who qualified for the 1500m final heat to be held tomorrow include David Aubry (@david_aubz) of France (4th), Kuzey Tunçelli (@kuzeytuncelli) of Turkey, and David Betlehem (@betlehemdavid) of Hungary.

1500m Freestyle – Preliminary Heat Results

  1. Daniel Wiffen (Ireland) 14:40.34
  2. Gregorio Paltrinieri (Italy) 14:42.56
  3. Ahmed Jaouadi (Tunisia) 14:44.20
  4. David Aubry (France) 14:44.90
  5. Kuzey Tunçelli (Turkey) 14:45.27
  6. Bobby Finke (USA) 14:45.31
  7. Damien Joly (France) 14:45.52
  8. David Betlehem (Hungary) 14:45.59

Shockingly, Florian Welbrock of Germany placed 14th in the preliminary heats in 15:01.88. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics 1500m bronze medalist will not return to the 1500m finals.

Other Olympic 10K Marathon Swim finalists who competed in the 1500m freestyle in the pool, but did not make the final heat include Carlos Garach Benito of Spain who finished 22nd in 15:20.84, Henrik Christiansen (@henrikchristians1) of Norway who finished 20th in 15:14.11, David Johnston (@davidjohnston14) of USA who finished 18th in 15:10.64, and Victor Johansson (@victorjohanssoonn) of Sweden who finished 15th in 15:05.62.

Tomorrow, the top 8 finishers will face each other in a major battle in the pool. Then again for one the last match in the fast-flowing waters of the Seine on August 9th. That 10 km marathon swim, in our opinion, will be the most technically challenging race in world championship and Olympic marathon swimming history.
