Andrew O’Malley, a long-time South End Rowing Club member, recently established the Northern California Open Water Swimming Association, a non-profit organization that governs swims in San Francisco Bay, Lake Tahoe, Monterey Bay, the Farallon Islands, and elsewhere in Northern California.

The 4-time Trans Tahoe Relay member explains, “We are working with the Monterey Bay and Lake Tahoe people to provide a united front for swimming in Northern California. We are mostly in alignment with standard marathon swim rules, but we don’t discriminate between male and female swimwear, and we allow naked swimming [see rules here]. We will sanction any swims in Northern California.

With the Lake Tahoe’s popularity increasing, we’ve raised the bar for those who love swimming the lake as much as we do. We’ve now created the ‘Tahoe Triple Crown’ award and our sister organization dedicated to Lake Tahoe, the Lake Tahoe Open Water Swimming Association.”
