Like many of these competitors, Michael Read of Great Britain has been competing for decades.
The 76-year-old Read finished 7th in the men’s 75-79 age group who has been squeezing in international competitions his entire life between work and family obligations. This year, the 33-time English Channel swimmer completed the 46th annual International Swimming Marathon of Toroneos Gulf. “Toroneos was incredibly hard this year with a F4/3 headwind the whole way. I finished about 11:55 pm [in 15 hours 15 minutes], just before the end of programme fireworks, but got a wonderful reception. It is a wonderful swim [where he finished 12th overall out of 20 competitors in the 26 km swim].”
