Since 2008 at the age of 17, two-time Olympian Chad Ho has finished in the top 10 in the men’s elite aQuellé Midmar Mile race every year, including his victorious run of seven Midmar Mile titles between 2010 and 2016.
But Durban-based 20-year-old Michael McGlynn was not to be denied this year in the mile race across the Midmar Dam. Last year, McGlynn finished second, but he absolutely dominated this race, winning by 36 seconds over Ho and Henré Louw.
McGlynn’s victory was not necessarily an upset, but the gap between the top three swimmers was a bit unexpected. McGlynn tore through the hot spots to a clear victory, the fastest time among over 11,500 participants.
